The Third Book of Tiny Daily Readings in Spanish is now available on Amazon. After just one year of these tiny daily readings, my students are reading intermediate-level texts with confidence and fluency… on their own.
When I first started writing these tiny texts, my classes needed short, daily readings with activities embedded in the texts.
These texts take no more than 10 minutes to read, are varied between history, culture and short fiction, and have margin notes for all vocabulary so that they can be read by anyone… even the student who has been checked out all semester!
Every text has accountability. The texts are written as cloze passages with a word bank. My students report that they enjoy the puzzle-like challenge of fitting the right word in the right place, and I like that this format encourages them to pay close attention to the meaning of the paragraph. Other activities encourage truly active reading. The culture and history texts are drawn from many Spanish-speaking countries.
This third book focuses on intermediate level texts. In my classes we read a text every day, finishing one book per semester. By the end of the second book, my students are reading intermediate-level texts with confidence and fluency. This third book is written to support their engagement with my class library of intermediate language learner texts. This is an excellent addition for fans of the Two Conversations Classroom who are looking for a brief second conversation and to promote literacy every single day.
In my own classes, students master these short readings best when I ‘bookend’ the readings with two activities. Before reading, project a picture related to the text and talk about it. 3 minutes is enough! Write a sentence or two on the board. Students then read the text on their own. After reading, I always ask a few easy questions so that students learn to retain what they have read. Pictures talks and other activities are in the online resource hub for this book.
