“Un gato puede ser un gorro” is a collection of 6 easy to read comics for beginners (132 pages). “Esme y Beto” is a full-length graphic novel following the friendship of two high-school students who encourage each other to cultivate new interests (110 pages). Both of these two comic books include all Spanish words defined in the footnotes on the same page, making these texts inviting to lower-level readers.
The four books in the series of “Mundo raro” comics are each about 50 pages long and feature simple story lines with selected words defined in the text, and a full glossary at the end of each story. An example of the glossing from the “Mundo raro” series is provided below. The text complexity in the “Mundo raro” series ranges from beginner to intermediate, with most of the comics comprehensible to low intermediate learners.
“Just wanted to let you know that we just finished reading your new graphic novel in my online level 2 class. It was a big hit with these high schoolers who come from varied and often poor language experiences. I really enjoyed it too. Having every word translated made it a perfect first book! Most importantly, I think everyone can relate to some aspect of that book!” – Odile M.
