In a one day workshop Mike reveals how easy 90% target language instruction can be with a series of demonstrations. Starting with easy to implement activities such as Calendar Talk, Guess Who, Card Talk and Student Interviews, the morning session goes on to focus on One Word Images with lower level classes AND modifications for upper level classes to address AP and IB themes. Mike discusses use of wall space and how to anchor classes using the Sweet 16 verbs, creating a common experience for all students. Moving from images to narrative vignettes, Mike demonstrates his unique approach to Write & Discuss. We review several activities that extend the class texts created so students thoroughly acquire language.

In the afternoon session Mike demonstrates “Las maravillas”, his approach to bringing authentic resources into language classrooms. “Las maravillas” reach students with a light touch; there is appropriate scaffolding which inspires and enlightens students without drowning them in incomprehensible noise or burdomesome tasks. Workshop participants get access to his growing library of Spanish-language maravillas to use in their own classrooms. He also demonstrates simple visual strategies to introduce academic content in a succinct, powerful format. Mike presents his library of interactive music activities which he uses as brain breaks; workshop participants will be able to access them in their own classes. The late afternoon turns towards discussion of building and maintaining a classroom library, including activities that teachers should use to teach their students to browse books widely. The afternoon session ends with a presentation on classroom management: tips on how to run a tight ship so that your students contribute to a positive classroom environment.

This workshop does not end at 4pm! Participants have a year of access to the “workshop online” where each technique is presented on video so that you can go back and refine your skills all year long.

11767 Harbor Boulevard

Teachers love this workshop!

I’m loving the One-word Image lessons with my students. It was great being in your workshop in Japan last month, and I’m happy to have made some pretty great changes in my classroom.” – Paul

“I attended Mike’s workshop in Seattle ahead of his Portland Cascadia conference. Wow! He clarified and simplified so much for me… Mike modeled and clarified how to provide fresh CI every day… to be clear, comprehensible, write and discuss and then move on! His emphasis on using the sweet 16 verbs to anchor and recycle CI in a natural, spontaneous way also solved my problem of feeling like I was all over the place. I had so many “AHA” moments even though I’ve attended many other CI/TPRS conferences and have been using CI for over 7 years. Thank you Mike!” – Karen Olsen

“Hi Mike, I just wanted to let you know that the workshop that you did with my department has made an impact. One of my colleagues has continued with the OWIs and her students love them. She also did a Movie Talk lesson and then expanded off that with different versions based on the Movie Talk. She is excited because she sees how the students are acquiring the language.” – Cameron

“I want to take this opportunity to share how well FVR has been going in my class. That chat I had with you when you were presenting at my school (in Oregon) was the last piece I needed to have direction and take the leap. After a few weeks I asked my students for feedback (via an online survey), the feedback was overwhelming positive.” Stephanie

“As a newbie to CI, I need all the help I can get! Thanks for all the ideas and inspiration in Vermont last month..” – Barbara

“Thanks for putting new sparks on the fire for me and my students.”

The Maravillas will be an awesome change of pace this last few months of school.” – Viviana
