In 2017, I wrote in the preface of Rūfus lutulentus that the book was “the most extreme example of sheltering vocabulary to date, which likely ends there.” I didn’t imagine pushing the limit on that, but 2020 was an unusual year to say the least. One pandemic goal was to write a new book shorter than Rūfus lutulentus, with fewer words—if possible—more cognates, and more familiar landmarks from the ancient world. The result is this novella. Dare I repeat, once again, that I think this is the limit?
Despite being the shortest Pisoverse novella with the smallest vocabulary to date, Mārcus magulus can serve as an introduction to a variety of complex topics, including xenophobia, immigration, imperialism, colonialism, identity, and the occult. Teachers are encouraged to make note of what students find
compelling, and consider exploring more of that in class.
